Scandals at Royal Military College, Duntroon, routinely come to life to be met with outrage, promises to never allow a repeat of offending behaviour, followed some years later by another revelation and so the cycle goes.

I should make clear that Mr. Coxon is president of one of the bodies representing Vietnam veterans. His opinion is his own. It is not representative of war veterans as a whole.

Mr. Coxon's opinion would be supported by many old guard soldiers who endured these physical and psychological abuses, survived them, and continued their service. It was a reality for many. But to accept this mis-treatment of young Australians who seek to serve their country as "normal", and even to assert it to be a critical predictor of courage under fire is a nonsense.

Australian soldiers as far back as Gallipoli and previously showed themselves to be better fighters when they were provided information on what their objective was and why they were to perform the duties they did. This was in contrast to British commanders who treated their troops as automatons.

Beatings, humiliations, denigration, have lead to suicide in our armed forces in recent times. They have made this terrible choice because the very units they wanted to be a part of them abused and tormented them. This in no way correlates with how they would have performed in a conflict zone. This old excuse for mistreating fellow servicemen has cost these young members their lives and the chance to serve. And why? because their officers, NCOs and peers denied them the respect they deserved from their own.

One can assume many young men and women who wish to serve in the armed forces, and whom would be ideal candidates, would forsake the opportunity not because of fear of an enemy, but a natural loathing for being abused by our own in the confines of military service.

Able service personnel do not look for fights but are prepared for them in battle. To assume that beating, whipping, burying people in boxes, humiliating, intimidating, insulting them toughens people is surely a nonsense. And clearly, some are so distraught by the attacks they die, by their own hand, we assume. I wonder if those who share Mr. Coxon's view really appreciate the difference between toughening a person (in strength, self-reliance, character) and simply making a person hard, cold, uncaring.

And for anyone who believes that it is necessary for troops prone to capture to be prepared for torture at the hands of the enemy by controlled stress and duress in Code of Conduct courses, I wish to say that is a separate debate.

Mr. Coxon and a succession of Duntroon commanders and commanders in other units support for simple bastardry is what I am denouncing.

John Hunter BSW (Distinction), MAASW (Accredited), MACA (Clinical)
Medicare Provider of Counselling Melbourne and Burwood East.
Medibank Private registered.
Mobile 0405 107 476, Ph. The Casino spokesman said Mr.Fevola was told it was in everybody's interest and Mr. Fevola left "voluntarily".

A coup in publicity for Crown Casino to get that story and a sound bite from the casino spokesman on the radio. It suggests the monster Crown organisation has a heart and intervened to spare a patron more losses.

I am glad for Mr. Fevola. I pity so many others I have spoken to over the years.

I wonder how many other people knew Mr. Fevola had a gambling problem before the Crown Casino spokesman's statment to this effect was broadcast on national radio. It certainly has spread the word. But no pain for the Crown Casino.

Mr. Fevola's difficulties with alcohol are certainly well publicised and are something Mr. Fevola is reportedly getting assistance to overcome. As such he deserves as much support as any one of the thousands of Australians who find alcohol a surprisingly nasty addiction. I wish this young man success with both alcohol problem and the gambling problem so widely broadcast by the Crown Casino spokesman.

If only the Crown and other gaming businesses were as prompt to act in the case of lesser known persons who find their lives going down the toilet because of the planned hypnotic effects of Australian designed poker machines, their proliferation and the environment created by venues to attract and hold what they call customers.

Call me cynical but I suspect Crown Casino pushed their story to distance themselves from Mr. Fevola. No one notices when Joe or Jill Average walk glazed from a venue having lost their week's earnings in a compulsive gambling session unable to pay the rent, feed the kids, pay busfare to work. But if someone as recognisable as Mr. Fevola is seen, somebody might question Crown Casino if it did not make a fuss of being a "rescuer" and "protector" of the venue.

A casino employee once briefed a group of gambling counsellors which included myself in an "orientation evening". Having spoken of the Sheiks who visited and were required by Crown Casino to put up $1,000,000 in advance as proof of their "good faith", we were sat down and told some of the history of the Crown Casino which this young man was proud to provide.

In the two short years operation of the small, temporary casino which used to sit adjacent to the Police Complex near the former Spencer Street railway station, Crown had made enough profit to build the massive Crown Casino complex on South Bank. I was amazed and asked,

"Are you saying that in just two years you got enough money from your gambling customers to finance this entire complex?" My disbelief at the callousness of this was lost on the young man from the Crown Casino.

"Yes" he said with satisfaction. "It was a good business plan".

Probably "good business" to usher out the door minor VIPs like Mr. Fevola, one time AFL champion, who are highly visible victims of the proliferation of gambling opportunitis and government addiction to the tax revenue they provide (the fourth largest source of Victorian State revenue; other states are similarly dependent). Otherwise people might question just how much Crown Casino and other venues really care about patrons.

Tonight's media and the AFL seem puzzled Mr. Fevola is going to America. "Fleeing" or a similar word used on Melbourne Channel Ten news tonight. But he leaves with his brother, a family support, leaves public speculation and media stalkers. Mr. Fevola has done some pretty awful things perhaps but as he says, alcohol is the first step in all these humiliations.

I wish him well. Perhaps Australia will be generous enough to give him credit for owning up to the frightful degredations for which alcohol abuse can set up any of us. Good luck and courage on getting help for your demons.

John Hunter BSW (Distinction), MAASW (Accredited), MACA (Clinical), Medicare Provider of Counselling Melbourne and Burwood East, Medibank Private registered.
Mobile 0405 107 476, Ph. When our dams continue to hover at best around only 30-odd percent full, where is the foresight in wanting to to ease water restrictions? Such plans make it still harder to justify syphoning off Murray River water with a giant pipeline to provide Melbourne when the Murray is suffering further down the line.

Ballarat's Lake Wendouree has dried out by evaporation: a simple sign that rain has not been forthcoming over years. It is not the first time; probably not the last. Lake Bolac, further into the western district has been empty for a long time, too. Patience and nature will do the rest, one hopes. Now Victoria is bent on squandering precious bore water to fill Lake Wendouree. If there is insufficient rain to replenish a lake, there is certainly not enough to reach those ancient underground waters.

The desalination plant may prove to be important in the future. Reasonable voices raising environmental concerns have been publicly ridiculed.

Melbournians (and fellow Victorians) have demonstrated for months they recognise the importance of conserving water and have reduced their water consumption. Continuing to harness this public responsiblity would be preferable to the current raft of populist approaches focused on expensive, questionable solutions to water shortage.

John Hunter

Medicare Rebates for Social Workers Guaranteed

Great news! I am delighted to re-affirm that I can continue to offer medicare rebatable counselling for many emotional and psychological issues under Medicare's Better Access mental health initiative.

You may have heard on radio or read on the net that the Budget proposed to cut Mental Health Social Workers out of Medicare's Better Access counselling program thus limiting patient/client choice to psychologists only. The Minister for Health and Ageing has reversed this decision.

So my fellow accredited and medicare registered mental health social workers and I will continue, as do appropriately registered psychologists, to remain Medicare Providers of counselling. This means you can have up to 12 Medicare rebatable counselling sessions with a Mental Health Plan referral (Medicare Item No. 2710) from your GP or psychiatrist.

As a profession, social workers are committed to "Making a Difference" in people's lives. Mental Health Social Workers bring this to their counselling work: we treat the whole person, not just the problem; we recognise the significant influence which family, friends, the work place, the wider community, cultural background and belief bring to bear on us as individuals. I am glad to be able to continue to bring this frame of reference to my work with you in achieving the positive differences you want in your lives; often with assistance from Medicare Australia.

John Hunter BSW (Distinction), MAASW (Accredited), MACA (Clinical)
Medicare Provider of Counselling Melbourne and Burwood East
Mobile 0405 107 476, Ph. And the most important work we ever do. If we make a half reasonable job of it -being there, guiding rather than driving our kids, loving them, even when they are anything but likeable -then our children will have a good foundation on which to carve out their own niche in life. Making memories with children is important; they will remember us in the times we shared with them doing things: playing in a park, trips, games, jokes, time spent.

Mothers Day is a good reminder to tell our mothers we love them, and our fathers too. A day for mothers and fathers to take a little credit for what they have sacrificed; to share the tough times they have survived as parents, and the laughs and the pride they have in their children.

For those of us whose parents were perhaps less good than children deserve, a time to consider how well we have done in spite of it, and to look to a day when we may be able to forgive.

Happy Mothers Day.

John Hunter BSW (Distinction), MAASW (Accredited), MACA (Clinical)
Medicare Provider of Counselling Melbourne and Burwood East
Mobile 0405 107 476, Ph. Sat with two others my age. We finally had to admit defeat about 11pm when the DJs music was just too much to hear each other through. Admitting that age may have something to do with it is not easy when you still feel young.

But the love the couple showed, expressed in speeches and smiles, touch and gesture towards each other was a wonderfull thing to witness. Their bridal party were similarly open. We "old folks" agreed that this freedom younger people have about demonstrating and experiencing love is something that neither came naturally in our youth or young adult lives; nor was it modelled or encouraged as we grew up.

Arriving later in life at the importance of expressing feelings and the pleasure of having them coming back at us, I taught my mother to say "I love you" at the end of telephone conversations and at goodbyes. She is a caring, loving mother, but like her peers, talking about love was considered a bit "sloppy" or unnecessary. Friends in their 40s and 50s have told me they have had to do the same thing. We benefit by the expression and I know my mother gets a little "buzz" out of being free to tell he son what she feels.

So what? Well, simply, at whatever age, if you love someone, tell them. Tell them as often as suits. But once a day would be a recommended minimum. Love is so important to us, it seems foolish to risk doubt by not telling our loved ones; and each affirmation builds confidence and turns on the "happy neurons" in our brain and that of the hearer.

Credit Card Payment Option Added

Clients normally pay by cash or cheque on the day of service. Here they are:
- approval
- satisfaction
- a sense of purpose
- love
- fun

Yes, FUN. Professor Patrick McGorry is especially commited to youth mental health: academically as Professor of Youth Mental Health at Melbourne University; as founder in 1992 of EPPIC a service providing early treatment in youth psychosis; and as clinical Directory of ORYGEN Youth Health.

Glad, too, Patrick McGorry did not let his honour prevent him reminding us of the damage we do by indefinite detention to the mental health of asylum seekers, the vast majority of whom are found to be genuine.

I admired former cricketer, Adam Gilchrist, for his comment yesterday that Australia is obsessed with celebrity over substance. He would presumably be content with today's choice for top honours. Hopefully, funding, research and services in mental health will increase at State and Federal levels to match today's award to a mental health professional of international influence.

I was surprised to see people driving around with Australian flags attached to their vehicles. It reminded me of those drunken Southern trouble makers we see in American movies, tearing up the road flying a Rebel flag from their big four-wheelers. I hope this is a passing phenomenon and not the beginning of an expansion of our historical jingoism. And the flag itself does nothing to recognise the disposession of aboriginal Australians by European settlement.

John Hunter BSW (Distinction), MAASW (Accredited), MACA (Clinical)
Medicare Provider of Counselling Melbourne and Burwood East
Mobile 0405 107 476, Ph. I find this dispiriting. Dictionary.com defines this as "to deprive of spirit, hope, enthusiasm, ...(to) discourage; dishearten".

I think we all know that the most we can expect from any institution is the best possible; we cannot expect infallibility. Yielding to fear of legal suit in case a designated area fails to match the ravages of extreme nature on a given day, represents to me government failing to perform its primary duty: to provide support and leadership to those who give it power and authority.

Or should we extend this overcaution to other problematic areas? Should bride and groom more prudently promise to remain faithful "unless I meet someone I find incredibly attractive and can't help myself". We know that best intentions do not always succeed. We cannot know the future; we plan, and the rest is faith, hope and hard work. For mine, there is nothing generous, optimistic or comforting about this legal-speak.

It's All in the Wrist

An Age cartoonist parodying the controversy that follows a public contest like the AFL Grand Final included a quote from the wit Oscar Wilde who quipped in a play on words "It's not whether you win or lose it's how you place the blame".

The blame game in our own lives can stop us facing issues and working on them. Unless someone else is responible for our plight, and unless we can bring them to accept responsibility and act to resolve the conflict, our happiness is really going to be down to how we deal with the situation we find ourselves in.

Our attitude, what we make of a situation, is perhaps the key determinant in how successful we will be in improving our lives. He said his doctor had given him a referral three weeks ago and was embarrassed that he had been so slow in calling.
I told him what I would say to anybody who calls.
Deciding we need to call on someone else for assistance is a big decision. Actually picking up the phone and declaring it to another person is a mighty step, and a bit scary.
We rightly do not give up any part of our independence lightly. We only do so when we are absolutely certain we are stuck and out of ideas and/or that we can't go on like we are any longer.
So, we change when we are ready, not before.
We can sit on problems for decades, sometimes half a lifetime or more.
And when we do move on them and benefit from doing so we tend to berate ourselves by saying such things as "Why didn't I do this years ago?", "I was a fool not to do this earlier". But we did not wait because we were stupid, stubborn or anything else. We did not do it earlier because it was not time, we were still getting ready.
Call me any time you are ready to consider whether the time for talking is now. Scientists will tell you that all knowledge is simply the best explanation to date for the way things are and may change with further data.

Our personal reality is the mental representation we make for ourselves of our world, our relationship to it and the relationships we have with others. We constuct this on the basis of our perceptions, attitudes, emotions and experiences. In the process our mood at the time, recent history, fatigue, diet, sleep, physical fitness and well-being exert an influence.

Our realtity thus made is under daily bombardment by information from newspapers, TV, radio, and now the ubiquitous internet, emails, chat, youtube, twitter and more. Regretably the accuracy of this flood of data varies from the reliable to the speculative, conspiratorial and even deliberately malicious.

It is important we look after our own sanity, protect our feelings and conserve our energy for endeavours we believe worthy of our attention. Family, relationships, work, security, intellectual stimulation and emotional content are our primary responsibility to ourselves and those most important to us. If we tend to these, we are in a healthy position to be effective with others.

Too often we can be drawn into the litany of rumour, speculation, fear-mongering, and tragedy-wallowing beloved of sensationalist producers; and those who mishandle or deliberately abuse the freedom of information and scale of audience the web has brought us. Four Corners (ABC1-TV, Monday 31-8-09) is a case of the latter: conspiracy mongering on a grand scale for those interested in watching when the program's repeat telecast.

John Hunter BSW (Distinction), MAASW (Accredited), MACA (Clinical)
Medicare Provider of Counselling Melbourne and Burwood East
Mobile 0405 107 476, Ph. Some commentators have suggested these matters are a welcome distraction from decisions about the economy.

Whatever the case in Canberra, we can be pretty good ourselves at avoiding difficult decisions. Guilt can accompany indecision but unless it motivates us to do something, it simply saps our confidence and tends to immobilise us. Aside from those times when we intelligently avoid rushing into a dubious decision, I think we procrastinate because we sense deep down we are not ready to move.

Before we change we often need to experience discomfort with our situation; need to feel we have assessed the risks of making a change; to believe we have a reasonable chance of success, or to know we will be able to cope with an unsuccessful attempt and learn from it. Why else would we move out of the familiar even if it is not ideal.

People change when, and only when they are ready. We cannot make others change. We change when we see the benefits, know how to go about changing, and believe it possible. And we need to do it for ourselves, self-respect. When we choose action on this basis, solid change can occur. Just as removing the chock from under a wheel allows it to gain momentum and speed, so it is the decision which is the most critical part of any change. Once we can reach the decision to change, the previously unthinkable becomes very possible. And in regaining our control over our lives we make those we care about happier, too.

John Hunter BSW (Distinction), MAASW (Accredited), MACA (Clinical)
Medicare Provider of Counselling Melbourne and Burwood East
Mobile 0405 107 476, Ph. Pope's Canberra Times cartoon (sent to me by a friend) epitomises this spirit. It shows Queensland flood victims, man woman and child, eager to donate to the Bushfire Appeal, looking beyond their own urgent, tragic need. It is a reminder that when it comes to the crunch, this country is as good or better as any other: it rises to the occasion with unstinting generosity, tireless hard work, support, money and goods. It has been good to see our politicians in such a human light this time around too.

I know that in months to come, while the long slog of rebuilding unfolds, this exceptional demonstration of warmth will fade as the crisis passes. But I am going to try to keep somewhere in my mind a reminder to myself, that however badly people may behave at times, underneath, we are the same, good, ordinary, unquestioningly generous people who rushed to help one another in this terrible time of loss.

John Hunter.

Free Counselling for People Affected by the Victoian Bushfires

The Department of Humans Services advises that the Victorian Government has established a new telephone counselling support service for all Victorians affected by the devastating bushfires, which is being operated by Nurse-on-Call.

The number to call is: 1300 60 60 24

This service gives all Victorians the peace of mind knowing that the best, professional health advice is only a phone call away. Make no mistake. People change for the worse (temporarily) in prolonged heat such as we are experiencing these last few days. We lose quality sleep, don't eat normally, sometimes neglect our intake of water to compensate for fluid loss. We get tetchy, irritable, demotivated and lose focus.

Worse, we can up our fluid intake with more alcohol that we are used to. This adds to our dehydration (a natural function of alcohol)and the extra alcohol effects ourpersonality, behaviour and thinking. Small disagreements can become major arguments and can lead to violence.

Domestic violence call outs for police, assaults and even murders increase in very hot weather. So it is a time to remind ourselves that, whatever is getting under our skin, getting us "hot under the collar" may be as much a part of heat distress as it is anything else. Perhaps it may be a good time to remember that old advertising line "You're horrible when your hot" and postpone important debate and arguments till the temperature has dropped and we have all "cooled off".

Our relationships would probably benefit by this approach even when the weather is not an issue.

Stay cool, ice out in a cool bath, drink lots, keep alcohol to a minimum, ride the heat wave out. As Melbournians, we will be soon enough be complaining about the cold come Winter.

John Hunter BSW (Distinction), MAASW (Accredited), MACA (Clinical)
Medicare Provider of Counselling Melbourne and Burwood East
Mobile 0405 107 476, Ph. Who says? Resolutions made on the run may do our confidence more harm than good.

New year can be an unsettling time. We often feel a social pressure to make new year’s resolutions. Commitment under pressure is extremely difficult to fulfil. We are much more likely to succeed is we decide on our own judgement to make changes, in our own time, when we are ready.

A rushed pronouncement that we will suddenly change our behaviour – such as, smoking, drinking too much, working too hard – more often than not sets us up for failure. A rushed failing attempt increases the chance of our not visiting the subject for some time.

If the subject is something important which affects our health, relationships, our view of ourselves, planning, preparation, organising supports alternative activities and rewards is worth the delay. Your new year’s resolution then might be to not make rash promises to yourself or others which are likely to result in a sense of failure and possible embarrassment. The result may well be that, when you do begin giving up smoking, for example, or undertaking exercise perhaps, you will succeed and not be stresses about premature New Year resolutions come 31st December 2008.

All that said, people do sometimes manage to make a new years resolution and hold to it. Perhaps they are highly ready, have done their thinking, and have planned how to avoid or deal with their temptations, and are satisfied with the higher rewards of independence.

Discussing your needs for change and how to put it into practice with family, friends or an objective, confidential counsellor who will not judge you as you struggle but support you in your change, can be a helpful adjunct. We are, after all, only human. Enquiries are welcome.

Happy New Year from John Hunter.

John Hunter BSW (Distinction), MAASW (Accredited), MACA (Clinical)
Medicare Provider of Counselling Melbourne and Burwood East
Mobile 0405 107 476, Ph. Who benefits? - only banks and businesses. Hasty, unnecessary buying causes pain into the New Year and beyond.

With economic uncertainty a daily news topic, this is an ideal time to reflect on meaning rather than material cost: It is the THOUGHT that counts, and without that, it is all just “stuff”.

Here are some commonsense tips to make this religious/holiday period more relaxing and happier.

On presents:
-Allow yourself to give what you can afford, rather than incurring ongoing credit debt to make a passing impression on others. A personally made card, a jar of home made pickles, a cheap but attractive nic-nac that suits the person you are giving to means more than an expensive luxury.

-Consider inviting friends to donate to a charity or cause close to your heart – the Salvation Army or St. Vincent de Paul, Anti Cancer Council, Greenpeace, Lort Smith Animal Hospital, to name a few.

On Xmas dinner:
-Eat a little before you arrive so that you are not famished by the time dinner gets underway.
-Be yourself. Do not compete with people who act in uncharacteristically loud or boisterous manner.
-Avoid drinking to bolster confidence. Channel any nervousness to keep you focused on those you are with.

On dealing with difficult guests:
-Remember how important your immediate family is and what they think of you.
-Try not to take to heart things said by family members who are drinking.
-Remember we can choose your friends but not your relatives. So you will probably have to deal with all these people next year. In some cases, diplomacy for this part of one day will pay great dividends for the rest of the year till next Christmas.

On Xmas Drinks:
-If you normally drink less than others, you are more susceptible to alcohol’s effects. If they say something silly or regrettable, resist the temptation to duplicate their silliness. You will be pleased with yourself later; as will your host and those you came with.
-Ask yourself how significant a part a person plays in your life before you take offence and react unwisely.
-Drink water. It will not dilute the effects of alcohol but it will keep you hydrated and more comfortable.
-If you choose to drink, pace your intake. Coffee, exercise, showering, food will not remove alcohol from you system. Only time allows your liver to process alcohol at about one standard drink per hour.
-Remember midday and afternoon drinks tend to have more powerful effects.
-Please, if you drink, let someone else drive, let someone take your keys while your rest if they ask, or give a taxi driver a present - he is afterall not celebrating and would appreciate the fare.

MOST OF ALL have a wonderful celebration and enjoy renewing old acquaintances and sharing the year’s news and the new year’s hopes and plan.

John Hunter BSW (Distinction), MAASW (Accredited), MACA (Clinical)
Medicare Provider of Counselling Melbourne and Burwood East
Mobile 0405 107 476, Ph. I enjoyed putting the News together so it is with some little regret that I have decided the August-September edition of JHa News, will be the final issue.

Pressure of work quickly reduced JHa News to a bi-monthly publication. Practice demands since then have continued to grow. This blog has been in operation for some time now and provides a quicker method of getting information out. All this has made it a natural decision to discontinue JHa News in its larger periodical form.

I will, of course, continue to publish articles on mental health and well-being, news of the counselling practice and latest Medicare and other changes which may be of interest. From now on, however, these will appear on my "Talking Makes a Great Start" practice blog.

Bookmarking the blog site will make it easy to check for news. Alternatively, if you go to the John Hunter & Associates website homepage (www.johnhunter.net.au), you will find a link to the blog in the spot where the Newsletter Subscribe panel once was.

Thank you to all those who supported JHa News. It is appreciated. I hope you enjoy making the change to the Blog.

John Hunter BSW (Distinction), MAASW (Accredited), MACA (Clinical)
Medicare Provider of Counselling Melbourne and Burwood East
Mobile 0405 107 476, Ph. We crave certainty so knowing sufficient detail before we launch into something new is healthy, natural caution. These points may help:

Contacting a counsellor comes with no obligation to make an appointment. You may choose to do this after assessing qualifications, experience (often available at the counsellor's website) and judging instinctively by the telephone conversation with a potential counsellor.

Attending a first appointment does not commit you to a second.

You may leave at any time, even during the first session if you are not comfortable or simply change your mind (depending on the counsellor a cost may or may not be incurred).

Your counsellor should be able to give you an idea of how long your involvement will be and costs should be specified. In my own case, I generally say that one or two sessions can be sufficient depending on the issue and the client. In longer work I expect to have a clear idea of progress by the third session. Beyond that I generalise that five sessions tends to be a useful working time (with the option to return should the client wish at some point in the future). I have on occasion seen clients for 10 and more session when the problem has been more complex, or when clients have moved through a number of issues.

People participating in counselling also need to be prepared to talk to the counsellor when they feel misunderstood or when they are not getting what they need. This makes it possible for you counsellor to explore this with you. You can then expect greater satisfaction. If this does not resolve the matter, you may be wise to go elsewhere, just as you would if you weren't happy with your butcher or doctor.

If you feel unable to raise issues with your counsellor, it is probably time to end the contact and go elsewhere.

After all, you are the focus of counselling, it is your call.

Regards, John Hunter

"Talking makes a great start"

John Hunter BSW (Distinction), MAASW (Accredited), MACA (Clinical)
Medicare Provider of Couselling, Melbourne CBD and Burwood East
Web: http://www.johnhunter.net.au/
Email: john@johnhunter.net.au
Telephone mobile: 0405 107 476, landline (03) 9539 2200.

Olympics in Beijing - Honouring the heroic in ALL OF US

Controversy has attended the China Olympics. Supression in Tibet, an attempt to go back on a guarantee of internet freedom, spectators excluded from the finishing line of an early bicycle marathon, armed police in the streets where visitors would otherwise have partied, two attempts to stifle protest on behalf of Tibet rapidly and brutally shut down by agents in the crowd, attacks on police in the north, unbelievable pollution, pre-filmed opening ceremony fireworks broadcast around the world as "live", and the featured child singer doing a Lilly Vanilly miming the voice of a child deemed insufficiently attractive for the face of young China. So many acts and messages counter to the spirit of these international games.

Nonetheless, we witnessed amazing feats of endurance and achievement as records were broken and medals won. These pinnacles of human ability transcend place and are a reminder to us all of the lengths to which the human body, mind and spirit can be extended to surpass previous performance, overtake past personal histories of bitter defeat and leave new benchmarks for strength and athleticism individually and in team effort.

I think part of the irresistable urge to watch or even just to sample bits of the Olympic broadcasts is born of curiosity and a wish to become more capable and independent and effective in our own lives. Many of us will never be competitive athletes but witnessing others, fellow members of humankind, doing the unexpected and breathtaking gives us hope that we might just be able to go our own personal "extra mile" and tackle a relationship problem at work or at home, or to make a fresh start on quitting cigarettes or walking every day for our muscle tone and mental health rather that only when the car is in the garage.

I would not have given the Games to the regime in China myself but in my loungeroom and the department store I stop a moment to wonder at the effort it took each of the thousands of athletes to make it to the national team representing their homeland; and to gasp and smile with some vicarious satisfaction at their victories. After all I am one of them, a human being, and I thank them for making me realise the wonders we are capable of in sport. For me it gives me more determination and hope of overcoming my weaknesses and poor choices if only I have the courage to begin and accept that sometimes we can do better with the help of others.

Regards, John Hunter

"Talking makes a great start"

John Hunter BSW (Distinction), MAASW (Accredited), MACA (Clinical)
Medicare Provider of Couselling, Melbourne CBD and Burwood East
Web: http://www.johnhunter.net.au/
Email: john@johnhunter.net.au
Telephone mobile: 0405 107 476, landline (03) 9539 2200.

Open to Your Calls

John Hunter & Associates resumes counselling at 253 Lonsdale Street, City and at 323 Blackburn Road, Burwood East as from July 24, 2008. My phone lines are now open at 9539 2200 or mobile 0405 107 476 or email john@johnhunter.net.au

I spent the last week and a half on a much awaited trip away to Queensland visiting Brisbane, Cairns and Port Douglas. I enjoyed the beauty and scale of Tropical Queensland's coastal region and the variety of flora. Visting the Port Douglas Rainforest Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary and a crocodile habitat were great experiences. The weather was unexpectedly mild - low humidity. Still the return to a deeper winter than in recent years is taking a little getting used to. Overcoat sellers should have a great year.

It was fun to get away but I am looking forward to meeting with current and new clients in the next few days and weeks with renewed energy.

Regards, John Hunter

"Talking makes a great start"

John Hunter BSW (Distinction), MAASW (Accredited), MACA (Clinical)
Medicare Provider of Couselling, Melbourne CBD and Burwood East
Web: http://www.johnhunter.net.au/
Email: john@johnhunter.net.au
Telephone mobile: 0405 107 476, landline (03) 9539 2200.

Petrol Prices: an example of control

Petrol pricing in Australia has become almost the sole focus of the federal parliament. No one can question the impact of rising prices. Pity those who live by transporting people and goods!

I am puzzled, though, that the ping-pong exchanges between the government and opposition persist. Do federal politicians believe their constituents do not know that petrol prices are dictated by source-countries and overseas U.S., British and other nations' distribution companies (Mobil, Shell, Caltex etc.).

The price of oil is important but is also a distraction from longer term issues such as an ageing population.

Distraction can also divert us from personal and relationship issues that need attention. We may devote a lot of energy and attention to the dramatic, the outrageous, the tragedy on offer in daily news broadcasts. We are overwhelmed leaving us with feelings of powerlessness and helplessness.

What is more useful and productive is or us to decide as unemotionally as possible what is, and what is not our responsibility; and to decide what is within our capability to change and what lies outside our abilities.

By recognising whose job it is, and assessing honestly and humbly what we can an can't do, we end guilt and pressure and are in a better position to make some difference: in our relationships, our workplace and the world beyond. And this can bring us added contentment and sense of purpose.

Regards, John Hunter

"Talking makes a great start"

John Hunter BSW (Distinction), MAASW (Accredited), MACA (Clinical)
Medicare Provider of Couselling, Melbourne CBD and Burwood East
Web: http://www.johnhunter.net.au/
Email: john@johnhunter.net.au
Telephone mobile: 0405 107 476, landline (03) 9539 2200.

Exta Opening Hours - Thursdays & Fridays in the Melbourne CBD

In a recent post I signalled plans to make more time available for clients at my City rooms. A range of brightly coloured bottled cordials laced with alcohol such as vodka is extremely popular. The sweetness of the cordials overcomes the need to develop what my generation would describe as "an acquired taste" for alcohol.

The hotel industry predictably rejected the tax measure suggesting education was the key. Education is an ongoing process which informs. Increased prices due to the tax increase may help in a powerful way to reduce purchases of the youth targeted bottles.

People generally understand alcohol addiction or dependence (alcoholism) is widely understood as an overwhelming compulsion to drink which threatens health, relationships, employability, accommodation stability, mental health, physical safety through accidents and violence. Bingeing, on the other hand, is often seen as a simple lack of self-control. Increasing numbers of people attending my practice rightly report their bingeing as far more powerful than an occasional or even frequent "over-indulgence" in alcohol.

Bingeing is more an episodic form of alcoholism. Days, weeks, sometimes months can pass without a drink or craving. But once a drink is taken, they say "I can't stop", "I lose all control", "I can't get enough", "I don't think about the consequences".

In both cases - dependence ("alcoholism") and binge-drinking - the consumption is compulsive ; done in spite of what the person truly wants and to the detriment of what the person holds as dear to them."

What often delays a binge-drinkers recognising they have a problem is the wide promotion and social acceptance of alcohol, the failure to label it as a mind-altering drug of dependence, and it periodic nature ("I can go for weeks without a drink", "It's not like I'm an alcoholic").

Some people might believe that bingeing is preferable to daily intoxication. The down side for the body is that binging involves a sudden heavy attack on body and organ tissue which has developed no tolerance. This includes all major organs including the brain. Reduced mental function such as memory loss and heart and liver failure are just a few of the medical outcomes connected with lengthy consumption.

If we "need" a drink, we are in danger of graduating to compulsive drinking. Alcohol is least problematic when enjoyed (not needed) as an occasional, social activity in small amounts interspersed with regular bursts of alcohol free days: something we can take or leave at any time.

If you find alcohol is making the decisions for you, you are by no means alone: seek help and seek it early.

Regards, John Hunter

"Talking makes a great start"

John Hunter BSW (Distinction), MAASW (Accredited), MACA (Clinical)
Medicare Provider of Couselling, Melbourne CBD and Burwood East
Web: http://www.johnhunter.net.au/
Email: john@johnhunter.net.au
Telephone mobile: 0405 107 476, landline (03) 9539 2200.

Service Expansion from May.

I am pleased to finally be able to announce that as from this coming May I will be doubling the time available for counselling appointments. Articles have cited research by the University of Hull.

Whatever the merits of the study, it is potentially dangerous for anyone currently prescribed anti-depressants to suddenly quit. Going "cold turkey" with any medication, or any drug legal or illegal, is unwise. Sudden withdrawal can cause severe psychological and physical disturbance including hallucinations, sleep disturbance, paranoia, and psychosis.

Any cessation of psychotropic medication including anti-depressants needs to be carefully planned in staged reduction, reducing the intake gradually in steps leading to nil intake.

If you are on a medication for depression, anxiety or any other emotional or psychological issue,
AND your mood, behaviour, feelings and thinking are better now than they were before you started taking the medication, why stop? Do no be panicked by media reports: if you are uneasy about what you have read or heard, speak to your prescribing doctor. There may be occasions when parties living in separate accommodation for a short time proves useful. But couples too often agree to the separation without little idea of the inherent angers such separations the relationship.

As I see it, trial separations expose the relationship to a number of risks:

- if you avoid relationship strain by moving away from it, you leave with the memory of the relationship as unendurable. It may be hard to consider going back. Relationships with children also change for both parties.

- a new status quo is established. The will require considerable energy and effort to overturn and may have future legal implications.

- separation returns us to the relative ease of single life (even if there are children): no longer must we negotiate, compromise and factor in others’ day-to-day decisions.

- no one likes change; if you’ve made one difficult change already, what makes another (getting back together) attractive. Much of life is about enduring anxiety, discomfort, even pain. These are often challenging but passing aspects of a process from which individuals can emerge with greater awareness of self and others.

Most of all, we need to be clear. In the phrase itself, it is the separation that is being trialled, a “test drive” of singleness, if you like. If so, this represents a turning of the couple outward and away, rather than in toward each other in search of a solution.

Relationships are demanding at their best: so if we trial the single life having "temporarily" moving out of a relationship which causes us disquiet and distress and enjoy the relief, how keen might we be to return and face the hard work of mending the relationship.

Too often in my practice, men leave when women ask them because it is the “gentlemanly” thing to do. But where there is no violence, no abuse or intimidation, leaving can be fatal to the relationship and have legal implications if the separation runs to divorce.

If our relationships are important to us, we need to put in the hard work, seek help and only
when all efforts are exhausted, then perhaps separate as a resolution, not as a trial.

Author's cautionary note: This article sets out to challenge a popular notion. The opinions expressed should not be taken as advice for particular individuals or couples. I would be happy to explore this issue with individuals or couples who are considering a trial separation.
<br It is easy then to become dismissive (“That happens to everyone”), accuse the other of imputing us with unworthy motives (“How could you think that about me?”) or to interpret emotion as an attempt to manipulate (“You always turn on the tears/You always walk out”).

All the other person generally wishes to communicate is that they have had an emotional response: they are feeling hurt, scared, anxious, confused, unloved. Emotions are not arguments or statements. They are gut reactions, physically experienced (breathing, skin temperature, heart rate) and often move faster than our thoughts and frequently interfere with our thinking.

If we can make ourselves take a breath and replay what has been told us and focus on the emotional unpleasantness the other has had the courage to disclose to us, we can avoid having both parties becoming emotional, confused and hurt.

A preferable Scenario: my partner, my daughter, my workmate expresses an uncomfortable emotion. If we acknowledge their feeling, the person will feel less uncomfortable. A simple “sorry” is a magic word here. As in, “Sorry you’re upset (sad, disappointed, etc.)” and an invitation to explain the thinking that goes with the emotion: “So tell me a bit more about this”. Allowing the other to speak about the triggering event is a practical demonstration to them that their well being and the relationship are valued.

In practical terms, try to avoid going into automatic defence mode. Instead listen, acknowledge and engage with the other party in a problem-solving conversation. This makes it likely the matter can be resolved in a relatively shorter time and encourage openness in future.

It is important to reject some of the unconscious misconceptions we may have about saying “sorry” as a first response:

Sorry is not a show of weakness – it shows concern and compassion for the way the other person if feeling.

Sorry is not necessarily an admission of guilt – intentions and perceptions can be discussed more calmly once the emotion fades.

Sorry does not automatically mean other party is necessarily right (where the upset is over a decision) – discussion will follow when calm has returned.

The above fears are based on legal argument and may have their place in litigation. In our personal lives and relationships, however, “Sorry” is the sweetest word. It tells us when we are upset, frightened for the relationship and fearing an adverse reaction to our disclosure that we can relax, we can expect to put our case, as it were, and be heard. Thus we have hope of clearing up the matter with our friend, relative, lover, and get on with the good in life.

John Hunter, Melbourne

If you would like to discuss your relationship issues, please contact me for an appointment.

John Hunter, Medicare Provider of Counselling, Melbourne and Burwood East.
Mobile: 0405 107 476, Landline (03) 9539 2200, email: john@johnhunter.net.au
Web: http://www.johnhunter.net.au/

"Talking Makes a Great Start"
